Benni!!! Is he as good as we think?

sasman's views on Benni McCarthy, Blackburn Rovers' South African International striker.

After watching our last few displays, I just wonder whether Benni McCarthy is as good as we think? Whilst not doubting his goal scoring abilities, it's just that the type of goals and the effect he has had is a bit suspect. With the majority of his goals being tap ins or rebounds, is he a striker that is there at the right moment or is he more.

We need someone to be a prolific goal scorer, leading us into the latter stages of the UEFA and FA cups, but is he the man to do that. I'm not convinced. He has failed to score two goals in a game and whilst starting of in a flourish, the goals have died down.

Goals should not be left up to our midfielders to produce, and whilst they are providing a fair few, our forwards, Shabani Nonda, Francis Jeffers and McCarthy really need to pick up their game for Rovers to make a climb up the ladder.

He has shown sparks of brilliance, cutting in and out of the opposing defence, but sometimes just seems lacking the spark so often mentioned with him. Could it be the lack of a capable partner, forcing him to venture deeper into play, or is it that he is simply overrated.

I'm not to sure what to think but hopefully I am wrong. So what do you all think?

I have to say that I don't think he is over rated at all, but maybe too much was expected from him? The fact that he is coming so deep to get involved does frustrate me even more so as Shabani Nonda does the same so it leaves no forward options at times. I quite like Nonda but maybe I'm begining to slightly come round to the view he could be another Florent Sinama Pongolle though?!?! Maybe it is the partner(s) Benni has? Personally I think Roberts and McCarthy could be the best pairing? We'll find out when Roberts is fit I guess!

Mourinho rates him - that's good enough for me!

As with your point on the ashes merlin you make a good one! If Jose rates a player then he has to be good. (And I mean this genuinely not in a sarcastic way.)
Hughes Da Man
He is good and very good actually but he isnt wayne rooney so dont expect too much from him. But he is a good player and many many times he has helped us out on tough games.

there is no question he is a great player i would say his playng stile isnt the best but he can put the ball in the back of the net what he needs is someone with pace to partener him someone who will make the runs
