Blackburn Rovers started the 2014-2015 season with a 1-1 draw at Ewood Park against Cardiff City on Friday Evening.
An unbeaten run now stretches to thirteen Championship matches with Tom Cairney superb goal cancelling out a Kenwyne Jones opener for Cardiff, however, it was Rovers that looked the more likely winners even if we didn't threaten the goal too much.
Gary Bowyer certainly felt that we deserved more and was left more than pleased with our performance, which in many ways I do feel he should.
He told Sky Sports: "I thought we deserved a bit more
"In terms of the possession we had a lot of the ball against a team that's just come down from Premier League. I thought we played very well but we should have had a penalty in the first minute.
"We recovered very well from their goal; we were disappointed with that but then we score a fantastic goal. The lad (Cairney) has got a fantastic left foot. Cardiff changed shape, which was a compliment to us, but we can take a lot of confidence from the way we preformed."
The loss of Matt Kilgallon just before half time meant that Jason Lowe moved into the right-back spot and Alex Baptiste switched to a central defensive role. In my honest opinion Baptiste looked better in central defence and I don't think we could use him at right-back all season. We either use Lowe or bring in a specialist right-back!!
Bowyer admitted that he'll be looking to "beg, borrow or steal" a defender, however, a specialist right-back or central defender as such isn't something it looks like he'll go after as he wants versatile players with him impressed by the versatility shown in the defence on Friday.
In my honest opinion this match was there for the taking, some better decision making from those on the pitch and maybe some braver moves with player personnel from Bowyer off it and this point could easily have been all three.
Cardiff didn't do much to live up to the pre-season billing as Championship favourites as if this is as good as they'll get us marking our twentieth anniversary of our Premier League win would be more likely to be celebrated with us as Championship Champions.
We've got to be a little bolder (particularly at home) as this is a match we could've won and perhaps should've won too as we dominated much of the second half, even a large amount of the first half, without really threatening the Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall.
I'm encouraged enough by this start though!!
