Shearer didn't just score Goals!

Blackburn Rovers legend Alan Shearer didn't only score goals for Rovers he also played prominent roles in other goals we scored having assists in many.

Having recently revealed the staggering number of hat-tricks (nine!) that Shearer scored in his four seasons (spread over three seasons as his first, and only for that season didn't come until his second season at Ewood) with Rovers as part of his amazing 130 goals in 171 League and Cup appearances Vital Blackburn member govtpros made this comment:

"Yeah, and unlike Andy Cole or is it Andrew? (I digress) it would be interesting to see his Assist rating too? Sorry Hughes Da Man try sorting that one out…"

After some looking around I have been able to almost unearth his complete statistic for his assists too! I say nearly as unfortunately I could only find out these stats so for League matches only.

So let's look at the number of goals per game Shearer scored as well as assists he amounted in the League whilst he played for Rovers:

1992-1993 Season - Debut Season
21 League Appearances 16 goals (remember he missed most of this season with a serious injury!)
Goal assists - 4

1993-1994 Season
40 League Appearances 31 goals
Goal assists - 5

1994-1995 Season - Championship Season
42 League Appearances 34 goals
Goal assists - 16

1995-1996 Season - Final Season
35 League Appearances 31 goals
Goal assists - 9

In the 1992-1993 and 1993-1994 seasons although others were chipping in with goals Shearer was scoring the vast majority of League goals so it was hard for him to assist others. The 1994-1995 and 1995-1996 seasons saw him not only score incredible amounts of goals but also assist so many others. These seasons saw his lethal partnership with Chris Sutton with the two combining for so many goals.

So in total Shearer ended with 112 goals in 138 League appearances at an average of an incredible 0.8 goals per game, well over a goal every other match.

In all fairness to Shearer he was scoring well over 50% over Rovers' goals during his time with the club so it was hard for him to assist but the stats prove that he also helped create goals also ending with a further 34 assists in these 138 League appearances so 0.25 assists per game, so on average one assist in every four played.

As I say the first two seasons saw him score so many of Rovers' goal (also saw him miss half of the 1992-1993 seasons games!) so it was hard for him to create them! With this said he would have also assisted several of his own goals by winning penalties but these assists are not given as such to him.

Sorry I couldn't find out the assist stats for his Cup exploits, I can tell you this though Shearer scored 13 of Rovers' 31 Cup goals during his time at Ewood. So although he wouldn't have played in all these games I would not be surprised if he had a hand in many of these goals he didn't score in the games he played also…
