How on earth did Blackburn lose?

How on earth Blackburn Rovers failed to claim at least a point from the match with Bolton Wanderers on Sunday I'll probably never know! Even only a point would have been arguably less than we deserved.

We dominated the match for large periods, had well over 60% of the possession, created enough chances with efforts on goal to win several games, failed to be given a goal that seemed over the line, had two penalties not given that probably should have been and even missed two others!

So instead of increasing our unbeaten run with at the very least a point we somehow managed to lose the game. Mark Hughes felt we were more than worth at least a point and had we won we would have more than deserved it.

Speaking to Sky Sports Hughes said:

"The two penalties at the end of the game should have won it for us, but, even before that, certainly in the first half, I thought some of our play was as good as we have played this year.

"We were unfortunate not to get any reward - we thought there was a genuine goal not given when the ball was clearly over the line.

"We had another penalty which was maybe a stronger claim than the ones we had at the end.

"But overall I can't be too disappointed, I thought the players played extremely well, and it's always difficult against Bolton if you lose a goal and we switched off at a corner.

"They're very adept at protecting the lead and hitting you on the break so overall it was a good performance, but we didn't get the break when we needed it."

Hopefully this disappointment can be put behind us when we take on Chelsea in the third round of the Carling Cup on Wednesday evening before getting back to Premiership action against a struggling West Ham United at Upton Park on Sunday.

This is a match I'd like to forget sooner rather than later, can't believe we lost this game, how?

Two very poorly taken penalties, identically taken I could have saved both! and bringing JR didn't help they just got in each other's way

I have never seen two penalties as poor as that taken consecutively!! I cannot understand why MGP doesn't take them, aside from Tugay he has the sweetest foot at the club and seems to handle pressure
Wellsy
They were poorly taken weren't they Wellsy, should have been lashed home! You can see an arguement for MGP but much like Beckham I'm not convinced he can take a spot kick like he can a free kick? As we've all found out over the years Beckham can't really take them. Plus MGP's form hasn't been great has it so far this season so would he have scored? Shabani Nonda is the man for me! Tugay if he is on the pitch.

Hi, I'm not a Blackburn fan but I watch your lot on the box because I'm South African and want to see Benni play. I also think MGP is one of the best players around at the moment, especially on a dead ball, and I'm sure he would have scored. The next penalty you get will see players running for cover! I think its self-defeating to replace a penalty taker just because he misses one. A great spot-kicker like Robbie Keane missed one for Spurs once but kept on taking them and has never missed again. Anyway, Barcelona manager Frank Rijkaard once said memorably: "If you win a football game, you deserve it." That's probably what Bolton are saying right now, even though you lot outplayed them.

Thanks Shannon for offering your voice of opinion all the way from South Africa. I agree with your sentiment about keeping the same penalty taker. We have had three now. It would have been better for Benni to step up again. I was surprised he didn't. In all honest I think the most ardent of Bolton fans will agree that they were lucky on sunday. But hey this is why we love football eh?
roversman
Nice to see our work is reaching you Shannon, glad Vital Football is helping you also communicate your thoughts on Benni and Rovers. I'd agree that changing the penalty takers isn't always the way to go as people do miss, would have liked to have seen Benni step up again but he didn't fancy it did he.

i dont have a clue we out played bolton everyware on that pitch and we have all the chances apart from one or two and yet they still won ?? its just there luck i suppose
marshinrover
Its the way Bolton play. I'm not trying to take anything away from Bolton as what they do they do very well so good on them but it can get frustrating knowing you shouldn't have lost!
Hughes Da Man
Have you seen Allardyce accusing Roberts of diving?? Remember two seasons back and Diouf the disgrace's dive against us (Which lead to a penalty and the only goal of the game) - At least Roberts had contact (both times) - Diouf dived after he went past Friedel - what a cheek!!!
