Blackburn Rovers have put the new contract in front of Lucas Neill; all they can do now is wait...
Mark Hughes however has been quick to point out that despite comments attributed to Neill nothing has changed. When speaking to Sky Sports News Hughes said:
"When you go into international weeks, you often get comments taken out of context and they fly over long distances and get embellished.
"Sometimes, it's more practical to sit the guy down when you see him face-to-face and talk things through with him.
"It's something we are already aware of. Lucas Neill is keeping his options open, we are aware of that, everyone else knows that, but we want him to stay.
"We feel we have a lot to offer him here. We're a good club, we feel we're going places and he knows what he'd have to give up if he decided to move on.
"But we're still hopeful that he will stay.
"We're certainly not resigned to losing him, we're in the same situation we were before the international break."
It is thought that Neill has been offered a contract with three to four years on it that could take him up to nearly 32-years of age. A contract for that long will give him long term stability and you do think that most, if all of his potential suitors would be hard pushed to match if indeed offer a contract for that long, even though some may be able to offer more over a shorter time.
It does appear though that despite Neill's latest re-iteration that he still intends to leave that Hughes still has no problems with retaining the Australian as his stand in captain:
"I choose Lucas Neill on how he trains, how he approaches games, and how he's done in games up to this one and I have to say he has been excellent in that respect."
