Overspending on agents - sound familiar?

Overspending on agents - sound familiar?

Nobody needs reminding that Blackburn Rovers wasted a lot of money last season after seeing Steve Kean, Henning Berg and Michael Appleton all receiving large sums of money and leaving the club, but it seems the reckless wasting of money did not stop there.

A report by the Football League this week indicates that Rovers spent more than £3.5 million on agents fees alone last season, more than double the amount spent by any other club.

Managing Director Derek Shaw has blamed the large fees on a failed transfer plan which involved signing high profile players in the hope they would put Rovers at the top of the pack come May.

He said: 'After suffering relegation from the Premier League, there was an influx of new signings, including a number of 'high profile' players on lucrative contracts, in the hope that we would make an immediate return to the top flight.

'Regrettably, those moves didn't work out, both in terms of results on the pitch and from a financial point of view'

Shaw however, seems convinced that this summer has been more successful, both with player recruitment, and financial management.

'Since Gary Bowyer's appointment as manager in May, he has adopted a very different transfer policy, bringing in a number of hungry, young players, on manageable Championship contracts'

Hopefully a turned corner for Rovers, as it seems we may be finally learning from some expensive mistakes.
