Hughes: I Thought We Were Great

Despite a slice of good fortune Mark Hughes felt that Blackburn Rovers deserved their 2-1 win over Wigan Athletic on Sunday afternoon.

Recovering from Emile Heskey's early opener Rovers recovered to earn their fourth straight win, their third in a row the Premiership as they made in six unbeaten in all competitions Hughes was very pleased with what he saw and the overall outcome of the game:

"I thought it was a fantastic game - I thought our play in the second half, in particular, was marvellous.

"But credit to Wigan as they came here and wanted to have a go as well.

"First half we didn't reach the level we can, but second half I thought we were marvellous."

With the match at 1-1 thanks to David Bentley's equaliser as half time approached, despite Rovers dominating for long period things could have been different had Svetoslav Todorov (who has already scored against Rovers once this season for Portsmouth) now on loan at Wigan scored from the spot. His effort would be saved by Brad Friedel's half time injury replacement Jason Brown:

"Jason came in and did exceptionally well. It was a great debut.

"He has great confidence and feels he can make it at the top - and you would not argue on that display."

Welsh International Brown, making his competitive Rovers debut made several crucial saves before his opposite number Chris Kirkland would make a mess of his clearance allowing Benni McCarthy to score again, for which he would also get credit from Hughes after the game:

"I thought Benni did really well today, his link up play was good and, on another day, he could have had some more goals."

Rovers now head into the International break knowing September had been a very good month to them, and the very beginning of October has started off in the right way. Although many will be jetting off for International duty some can take it easy as the efforts of the past couple of weeks would have taken a lot out of the club:

"We had a great night on Thursday, it takes it out of you emotionally, but I thought we were great today."

"We're looking forward to the rest of the season now."
