'If It's Football, It's Vital'

No To One Triallist Yes To Another?

Following a trial period with Blackburn Rovers Mark Hughes decided against signing defender Shilla Illiasu.

The 24-year-old Ghanaian World Cup star had joined Rovers for a trial from Ghanaian Champions Asante Kotoko, with whom he is captain.

Illiasu, who stared for Ghana as they progressed to the second round of the 2006 World Cup in their first appearance on the Worlds biggest stage, operates as a central defender, and although highly promising and with his youthfulness in his favour Hughes decided he would not add anything to the squad that wasn't already here.

Following an unsuccessful trail with Arsenal earlier in the summer it would appear that Hughes shares Arsene Wenger opinion that maybe the Ghanaian isn't quite ready for Premiership football just yet.

Meanwhile another former triallist, Egyptian Wael Gomaa has claimed his move to Rovers will be completed in January. Speaking to EgyptianPlayers.com he said:

"I left Al Ahli with the intention only of moving in January. There is no way Al Ahli would let me leave now, but I have come to prove myself to the English clubs."

"I have done everything I can. Blackburn have seen me and said good things about me, and have promised that they will take me in January."

Vital Blackburn were first to bring you news of a possible deal being tied up, but despite such a deal not happening in the transfer window just closed, and with it looking like the club would miss out on him it seems like he will sign after all, we will just have to wait a little longer.

Hopefully I can get confirmation on the Gomaa deal shortly?

Illiasu has a lot of promise so I'd be surprised if he isn't back in the Premiership within a few years. Wael Gomaa is very well known in Africa, one of the best defenders in those parts. I have limited information on the player but he seems all that and Rovers think he is "brilliant." Had his club, Al Ahli not picked up injuries to other defenders think he would have signed in this window as he apparently really likes the club. He is meant to be on a promise that he'll be signed in January.
