'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Plans for Blackburn Rovers Nagpur academy unveiled

The continued expansion of the Blackburn Rovers Indian youth academies and leagues is continuing at good pace with news of a developing league in Nagpur emerging to follow the existing set up in Pune and Delhi.

Indian owners Venky's have been using their links with Blackburn Rovers to help spot new talent in a previously untapped resource in India and in conjunction with football development in Asia are using the opportunity to develop school kids into the stars of the future.

Plans are already under way to finance and set up a league in the region of Nagpur and the aim is to have a quality batch of talent ready for the next step by 2013.

Shebby Singh, who is in charge of football development in Asia told the Times of India - 'These kids are quite flashy when on field I must say. Nagpur has a core and rich talent. I am happy with the progress. We actually are looking for such bold budding kids. Plans are also underway to set up a Blackburn Rovers Academy in Nagpur.'

'We plan to spend about Rs 1,200 per player per season. We have a proper team at place which will spot the talented kids for further grooming which will happen in Pune. From the selected lads, we'll further raise the bar and pick up a group of boys who'll be trained at Blackburn Academy in England.'

'The first season is underway at six different cities at present including Delhi and Pune. We vow to start the second season in more than 20 cities of India.' he added.

All very good to see Venky's putting their efforts into developing the future of Indian talent but that famous name they are using could do with some love and investment too wouldn't you say?

They certainly seem to be forging some good links and efforts over in India!

With all due respect, who gives a toss about India when they're killing the club here?

I think this is actually a good sign shows they are in with rovers for the long haul and not interested to make a quick buck and having an indian player(if hes goo enuf) in our team will give us a fanatical following back in india..............in my view this is a great move

It is a good sign that they are thinking of the future but you cannot finish a marathon without running the first few miles. The short term for us is now far more important and the Venkys have made all the wrong short to middle term decisions.

Football is big in east india and the cities. I speak from experience when i say I cant see many great players from india as Cricket will always be the first sport and football a distant second. It would be better if the Venky's concentrated on South Asia rather than India only.

(Sigh).............It's now only a matter of time before we have the next Indian "wonderkid" thrust upon us and forced into the Rovers team by the owners, so they can have the "honour" of bringing in the first Indian Premier League player (although they will have to settle for Championship) A complete and utter farce that they are doing things like this when Blackburn Rovers needs serious attention from them.
