Rovers slap huge price tag on Hoilett

Any thoughts of Rovers flogging Junior Hoilett to the highest bidder in January have gone flying out of the window with news surfacing that Rovers have put a £18 million price tag on Junior Hoilett.

Hoilett is out of contract in the summer and has been stalling since forever and a day on a new deal as the club and the player are apparently quite far apart on the size of a release fee that would exist in any new contract.

Newcastle and Spurs have been credited with an interest in the winger but will likely but put off by the over the top price tag on the Canadian who has been with Rovers since the age of 12.

If Rovers are successful in riding out January with Hoilett still at the club and the young flyer doesn't agree to extend his Ewood stay then the club faces the prospect of losing Junior to a tribunal hearing and picking up a sum considerably less than the money they are asking for in the January window.

Expect this one to go down to the wire.

Whichever way this goes I am afraid it looks like we have a position of weakness at the bargaining table

As a Villa fan that was very impressed by Hoilett in the game at Villa Park this season, I'm afraid that this piece of bravado won't work. All the strength in this situation is with the player, and the player really needs to be sold now. If you leave it to January you will risk him signing for another club, and leaving for nothing. Your club cannot afford that just like we couldn't with Ashley Young. Despite the statement, any offer around the £8-10m mark would surely have to be accepted. Bosman has a lot to answer for! Sadly for my club we have neither the funds, or the ambition to try for Hoilett ourselves. Happy days.....not.

Hoilett needs to be told he will be going nowhere in January,we are in a dogfight now,if he keeps us in the premier league,it will have been good economics. Then he can go where he wants in the summer, giving us time to find a replacement. We have been told we do not have to sell,I think the large fee sends a message out to potential buyers,it may also suggest that he wants to go,I would suggest he will end up at Spurs, lets hope its later rather than sooner!

If he is adamant on leaving, I'd let him go in a decent swap deal - for a good solid defender, or a decent striker.

£18m may as well be £220m no one is going to pay that money. Why should they as all they need to do is wait until he's out of contract and we would get a big fat £0m. I agree with the above post that if we get offered £5+ plus in January we will have to take it. Don't think Junior will sign a new contract, remember this deal was done and dusted a few months ago. hmmmm

We can set whatever price we want to - it's pointless. The only positive solution to this situation for Rovers would be a new contract and it's looking increasinly like that simply isn't going to happen. So shut up on this one Rovers. Get on with getting some points on the board.

We need replacements if he goes - if we get cash, I'm sure Venky's will put it all into their pockets again...
