'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Venky's damn calls for relegation scrapping

Yesterday a massive issue was bought up amongst the masses of the Premier League - the issue of relegation.

A statement was released that some of the foreign owners of Premier League teams wanted relegation from the top tier of English football abolished... effectively ensuring a closed shop amongst the countries elite.

Now you could be forgiven in these deeply cynical times for thinking one of these foreign owners would be Venky's. Certainly with Rovers at the bottom of the table and without much inspiration you may have even put money on it.

But it seems the Rao family are actually dead against it and even came out to clarify their own position.

A Rovers statement issued this afternoon read - 'In response to recent stories in the media, Venky's wish to clarify its position with regards to the current competition rules of the English Premier League'

'Our decision to buy a Premier League Football Club was heavily influenced by the quality, competitiveness and exciting nature of what we believe to be the best league in the world.

'We also believe that the EPL's success is, in large parts, down to its ability to create such excitement for all who follow it, fans, players and staff and of course we the owners.

'We see no reason why anybody would feel it necessary to change the current format of the competition and are proud and privileged to be a part of such a great League.

'We remain fully supportive and committed to the Premier League, its format and its successes and hope to be a part of it for many years to come.'

Glad to hear it, i think that it's most probably the Liverpool owners that started this off with the NFL comparisons. They've already mentioned breaking away and trying to sell off TV rights abroad so it would tie in with all that.

I think it's an absurd suggestion to scrap relegation - where on earth would all the feelings of pain, joy and ecstasy go?!

Yep - stupid idea - otherwise whats the point in playing the games!?

i agree.. the relegation battle is one of the best features of the Premier League and football in general. It would be insane to scrap it... once a team finds itself out of the running for a european place theres effectively no incentive to demand results. The whole thing would become very boring... but what it might start is a knock-on effect in the lower leagues. If the Premier League can scrap relegation whats to stop owners of championship clubs doing the same.
