'If It's Football, It's Vital'

A VBer tribute to Brett

So Brett Emerton has agreed to leave Blackburn Rovers after 8 years at Ewood Park.

When heard this I was hoping it wasn't true because when I thought about all the players that have played for this great club of ours he is one of my favourite ever Rovers, I was quite surprised by the club and the player to end his time at Ewood as Brett had enjoyed a good end to last season as a run of games and a couple of goals in the last two games against Man Utd and Wolves

The first time I saw Brett play for Rovers was in a friendly at Blackpool. I was sat in the old wooden stand that was set so far back from the pitch we might as well of watched it from the Pleasure beach, I remember him scoring a brilliant goal in that game and thought yeah we`ve got some play maker as well as a goal scorer here.

Signed by Graeme Souness in the summer of 2003 for a very modest 2million fee, Brett has gone on to make 247 appearances scoring 13 goals none more so important than an excellent taken volley against Wolves on the final day of last season.

Brett started his career in his native Australia at the Institute of Sport from which he joined Sydney Olympic in national soccer league (Pre A League) by which time he had already represented Australia at U-17 level 11 times.

Following the 2000 Olympics which were held in his home city Sydney, Emerton who captained the Australian football team the Olyroos was signed by Dutch team Feyenoord.

He stayed in the Eredivisie for three seasons winning his only major honour, a UEFA Cup in 2002 even though he was suspended for the final.

In the summer of 2003 he attracted of attention of several Premier League club namely Rovers and Newcastle but of course he opted to join Blackburn Rovers in which he scored on his Premiership debut against Wolves and has gone on to score 12 more goals for Blackburn Rovers.

So we say goodbye to Brett. He`s been a fantastic player to this club.

He`s played under 6 different managers if you count Tony Parkes and has never once really spoken an ill-word against his club, manager or team mates well not at least publicly.

But I am sure he`s not like that at all. He has always had time for fans and has always politely posed for pictures outside the ground and signed autographs. And I think he`s a top bloke so good luck in Sydney.
