News that Benjani has signed a new contract this morning has been met with a lot of moans and groans by the Rovers faithful.
Benjani reported to Brockhall training ground this morning to start his pre-season training to get him ready for the long season ahead. He told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph:
"I have always wanted to stay at Blackburn Rovers and I am looking forward to the new season here. I know I have to work hard in pre season to get myself ready for it.
"I believe there is a lot more to come from me at this club and enjoying a full pre season will help me to show that. I was playing catch up for most of last season and it was difficult.
"What has happened before doesn`t matter. It is what happens from now and that is why I was back in training and am determined to work very hard.
"I am looking forward to the new season and glad to be back here."
At first hearing the news, I was very disappointed. Why sign second rate free transfers when we have money to spend? 3 goals last season and we sign him up again, why?
However, one thing I like about Benjani is his attitude. He is a player who wants to play for our club and one who is not just coming for a last pay day. He has taken a small wage to play football for a club he wants to play for unlike some players we currently have (hint: he is a 6ft5' African Centre back).
He has proved on a couple of occasions last year he has ability such as when he turned the Liverpool defence and sent the ball rocketing into the roof of the net. Who is to say he won't do it again and on a more regular basis?
One thing is for sure though, if he turns out in Blue and white halves next season and tries his best and works hard, I will be sat there cheering him on. We could have done better, but he has signed, get over it and move on.
