Rovers target Monaco defender

Steve Kean looks to have found his first major signing of the summer transfer window in Monaco defender Cedric Mongongu.

Monaco have recently been relegated from the french top flight and Rovers are looking to capitalise.

The defender should be allowed to leave his current club for around £2.6 million, and Rovers are set to swoop in with a bid within the next day or two.

At 22, he is certainly in keeping with the youth recruitment at Rovers, hopefully another bargain to follow along the lines of Chris Samba and Ryan Nelsen.

A cheap replacement for young Phil, but with Mongongu being from the same country as Chris Samba, perhaps this is more than just a defensive replacement? A reason for Samba to stay?

Was heavily linked with massive clubs a couple of years ago including Milan ect, Still quite raw but has bags of potential, in todays Market, a smart aqusition and one which ticks all the boxes IMO, Its some positive news after all the bad press and negativity which has surrounded rovers up and down the country over the last couple of weeks, Its very close this one and sticking my neck on the line I would be 99% sure its a done deal, We have been working on this one for a number of weeks so its not case or rushing it through now as the homework has been done, Now our summer begins :-)

Sounds like a good deal if we can see it through. I've been going on about getting value from our funds this summer, and a 22 year old highly rated centre half at £2.6m certainly does so. Fingers crossed.

Mmmm - relegated defender, from the French league... I hope he is better than Upson. - Then again that can't be too difficult. Having potential is one thing, being able to adapt is something else. I think this will only work out if Samba stays and helps him out.

I agree FN, if we are to let Samba go we shoul still go for an experienced replacement as well as this fella. Would be good to get the first signing in pronto then the rest i'm sure will follow. You never know some of the negativity might creep away then and we can all start looking forward to next season, I know I am still regardless of who we sign. You can't please everyone whoever we bring in. We have to give Venky's and Kean a chance IMO.

The last relegated player we bought from France was Steve N'Zonzi and he turned out good enough ;) Sounds like a smart move this!!!

What is this defenders position, is he seen as playing alongside Samba or as his replacement? If he is to replace Samba, hope Samba can be persuaded to stay till January or June, to make sure Mongongu can step up from French relegation to Premiership mid table!

Interesting that this could be a ploy to try and keep Samba, however, he'd have to be good too and by all accounts he's not bad (or at least wasn't!!) Didn't know Monaco were relegated, jeez that's a mighty scalp to fall!!

isnt nzonzi from congo?

I think he has a lot of promise and that he is there to replace PJ but to think he was bought to convince samba to stay, i dont think so but it would certainly be a great prospect for the two players.
