Sacking Big Sam: Masterstroke Or Mistake??

Blackburn Rovers have today (in a stunning development) sacked Sam Allardyce!!

Allardyce and his assistant Neil McDonald have both left Ewood Park with immediate effect as a statement this afternoon confirmed (a statement that Mr Mikey has already covered).

Tensions were understood to be running a little high between the new Rovers owners and Big Sam since the takeover and the level of money that would've been available to him during the January transfer window is understood to be a major bone of content, however, the timing of his departure is still surprising isn't it??

Why didn't we make this move a week earlier as we could've got that master tactician Alan Pardew (I'm being sarcastic here!!) First-team coach Steve Kean has been handed the reins for the immediate future as the search for a new Rovers manager begins!! Has this manager already been sounded out though, as if they weren't why has such a move been made?!

If the new owners are unhappy with the style of play that Big Sam was going with and would rather give money to a manager that they feel can attract better players than the former Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle United manager would and also bring them a more attractive style of play that will also bring results then it will prove that masterstroke, however, unless they're planning on spending money in the January transfer window then the calibre of replacement isn't going to be that high is it?! That would mean this proved a mistake as Big Sam hasn't done a bad job at Ewood has he, and best of all he had the players on his side.

This move by Venky's will prove to be a masterstroke or a major mistake, it's just a matter of time before we find out which one it is.

This was quite a surprise...didnt see that one coming (already). My biggest concern is who will replace him. Chris Houghton is the bookies favorite...but that makes no sense. They got to have a "big name" manager lined up. Otherwise this is a major mistake at best.

Thought provoking indeed Walker, we surely must have someone in mind? Otherwise whats the point? We aren't going to reach out to the Indian masses with Chris Hughton in charge are we?!

If we get one of 2 Martins O'Neill or Jol (I somehow doubt it) it's a masterstroke. If we get Chris Hughton it's probably a mistake. If we get an unknown Indian who Venkys happen to know it's certainly a mistake! Someone in between (no-one springs to mind) I'll reserve judgement.

Bob Houghton instead gents, national coach in India. They will loan him for 3-6 month to see if he can do something. Buy or loan players from india like Baichung Bhutia in January. Why not if the target is to reach India and you are from India? Yes there is all the obvious reasons against, but it is the black horse in my eyes....cheers

My initial reaction is 'mistake'. I'll compare it to our situation at Fulham - Hughes has thus far proven unsuccessful with largely the same squad that Hodgson was very successful with. Is Hughes a bad manager? Nope, but our current personnel doesn't support his style of play very well and results have shown it. Anyone who comes to Blackburn will need to be able to operate with the existing squad; unless a massive January expenditure is looming. Good luck, gents.

I fear this will turn out to be a huge mistake. Sam has done a great job on minimal resources. Unless significant funds are made available we can only go backwards as a result of this. The players will be demotivated and fearful as Sam had a good rapport with most of the squad.

it's really ashamed that Big Sam got fired when he's doing a fine job, just for the second time in his career. I am sorry for him and wish him the best.

It had all gone a bit quiet - no news for a few days.. Jol has just left Ajax...

I'm surprised to read some of the comments. All I've ever heard from BR fans about Allardyce has been negative, yet now some appear to be concerned. Perhaps my observation wrong and many fans liked him but kept quiet. Can someone enlighten me? Anyway, your new money should keep you out of trouble even if you become one of these clubs that sacks managers every season.

done well with this group and was bringing on the youth. who is coming in? and just exactly how much will they have to spend? it really only can be a good thing if 1. there is someone else coming in and 2. they have a lot of money- because who could have performed better with the squad we have?

I think at this stage of the season it is a mistake, but I hope I'm wrong.

worst decision since Rovers parted company with Tony Parkes, Complete an utter idiotic

It's a big mistake, i'm praying hard we don't follow Newcastle's footsteps. They sacked Sam and went down immediately. We are likely to end up the same, unless a quality replacement is found, which is very highly unlikely.

I am not Big Sam's biggest fan - but he has done a good job for us. He has put together a decent squad of players who I believed would finish in the top 10 this season. Now we could be looking at players unhappy and wanting to leave, a new manager coming in and wanting different players etc - bad times.
FreidelNo.1
huge mistake...and a bigger mistake if john williams is out the door.
DommyWalker
Will Sam's legacy of using youth be continued?
glen9mullan
Looks like we are taking the Portsmouth road. I read in one of the press releases that this purchase is being financed by the Bank of India. If too much money is borrowed to fund a team that a different type of manager will want then its hard to see a secure future for the club. The management equation is you have either ability or money. We have sacked a manager who did it with ability ...... no money ......?????????????????
