Popov was denied a permit

Ivelin Popov's proposed move to Rovers fell through after a work permit application was rejected.

The Litex Lovech youngster was all set for a move after a medical was passed and terms agreed on a 2.5 million deal but the move was waylaid after work permit complications kicked in.

The problem is that Popov has not made enough appearances for Bulgaria in the last two years after picking up a fairly serious injury last season.

That piece of information may explain why no striker was signed and why Jason Roberts may still be with us for the time being.

Sam was keen, we were keen and the player was keen but it looks like we have missed out again.

Rules are rules. But it sucks that we have missed out on this talented young player. If we made our move sooner, we could've at least appealed the decision. I am not sure if we can now the window is closed. Maybe we couldn't move sooner because we needed Jacobsen off the wage bill. Either way, this sucks!

I hate that rule... stops clubs bringing in players who could have shined!

the rules are crazy, if he plays for his country and he's played a few games at least i don't see any problems. Not to worry though it might even spur JR on to be top goal scorer lol

Whats the fear of letting him into the country? He will do a runner? He will become a threat to national security? He's a professional footballer who has played for his country... jesus, yet the people in Parliament seem so slow to act upon people entering the country in the back of lorries. Infact we should smuggle him into the country via Dover! Seems easy enough!

Sky sports are now saying this wasn't the case. looks like Rovers needed to sell JR before bidding.
