Hoilett chose Blackburn over Glory Hunters

Rovers youngster Junior Hoilett has revealed he turned down Man United to come play for Blackburn from a young age.

Junior was over in his native Canada at the time but a random tournament in Wales changed his life.

He has actually been at the Blue and White since he was 13.

Junior speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph said - "I didn`t know a tournament that lasted 10 days was going to change my life,"

"But a Blackburn scout came up to my father, a number of scouts came up to my father actually.

"They all asked me to come on trial. Manchester United was the first club I came to on trial to but I decided to come to Blackburn and I liked Blackburn so I came here.

"I thought there would be more of a chance to break through at Blackburn and the way they talked about looking after me at a young age was fantastic. They did everything they said as well so I don`t regret the decision at all.

"Manchester United were quite keen on me at the time and asked me back but I had decided to come to Blackburn. The tournament was in July and I came over in March to Blackburn. Then I went back in the summer.

"They wanted me to move over but I needed a year to think about it.

"It was a very hard decision because my life was starting all over again. I liked my life in Canada and I had good friends but my family and friends supported me."

Choosing Man Utd over Blackburn? I like it!

And it is nice to see he has a down to earth supportive family.

I remember Derbyshire did something similar a few years back, it is nice to see players thinking about where the ply their trade and not just being a deer in a headlights...

A lot of young players do this cause they know , they won't get playing time at some other clubs like man u , chelsea . good to see them preferring football

Nice to hear... and the fact he's decided to stay and repay the club's faith in him says a lot about the guy's character.

I didnt expect him to sign a new contract but fair play to the lad..... Lets hope he fulfills his potential

So where is that Matt Derbyshire chap these days?
merlin
He is in Greece, sunning himself a charm whilst playing for Olympiakos..

I'm not sure if all this rings true - I like the guy and think he's going to be a great winger - but if someone asked you to join Man Utd at 13 - I'm sure most would go there (with the exception of some local rovers lads - Matty!) How would he know he wasn't going to have a first team opportunity when he reached his late teens or early twenties? Man Utd are always playing their youth and giving thema chance... I think that this is an agent stunt to get us to forget he stalled so long over the money we were offering him. I hope I'm wrong...

Mullan levels of cynicalness there!! ha ha! You may be right but maybe he is teling the truth here, he is nearly 20 now and when he was 13 it was 2002/2003 if I am not mistaken so maybe it was a good time to join us as the Man U youth ranks would have been fairly chocker!!!

definitely more of an opportunity here- and lets not be modest here, out academy is one of the very best. why wouldn't you choose it?

The right decision was made, as was the decision to stay here longer. He'll get more opportinuty to play and learn the game here. His chance might still come in the future to play for Manure but for this he'll have to give his best for us and that'll be our benefit.

If he went to somewhere like Man U or Chelsea now it could ruin him in all honesty...
