'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Sam tells Benni it's his call

Rovers gaffer Sam Allardyce has told Benni McCarthy that he is still wanted at Ewood Park and that it is up to him what happens - it's all about his attitude and goals.

Some constructive words have been passed onto the South African, who is a known hot head but also as a very talented footballer when he wants to be.

Big Sam, speaking to Sky Sports said - "All Benni has to do is run around, play like we all know he can and score me some goals. That way he will stay in the team every week. If that`s the case, there`s no need for him to go anywhere else.

"Unless somebody comes in with a massive offer and we can`t refuse it. Do the job we know he can do, score goals for Blackburn Rovers, he`ll go to the World Cup in his own country, which will be a great experience, then he can come back next season and do it all over again.

"The ball`s in his court. When he gets an opportunity to play, he must play like Benni McCarthy can, not how Benni McCarthy sometimes plays. At times he`s not quite shown the ability he has in every game he plays.

"You have to play your best every time you get picked in this league. This club has not had a player of his ability for a long time. What we want to see is that ability used on a regular basis. That`s all that`s keeping him out of the side.

"He`s too long in the tooth for me to change him, he has to change himself. I can`t change him. I can give him the tools to be better in every department, but it`s whether he wants to make himself better. If we get there, we can all go forward together."

So what do we reckon? Fair cop?

interesting stuff, I actually agree with what Sam is saying here...

I agree too. It's totally up to Benni how his season plays out and how he preps himself for the World Cup. The way I've heard Benni talk about the World Cup in SA you would think he would be a bit more revved up for the games he's played in recently but he doesn't look too enthusiastic. Hopefully he will listen to Sam's words, for Rovers and for himself.

fair call there, lets hope he gets the chances though
sasman
fair enough, there's probably a bunch going on behind the scenes between benni and sam that the media doesn't know, but there's a better vibe coming from this one than when sam goes off saying benni needs to shed some weight, needs a better attitude, etc.

Funny how different European managers are from American sports coaches and managers. You would never hear an American coach say that a player was too old to change his playing style or attitude--whether it was true or not. Maybe I haven't been following European sports long enough but it's refreshing not to hear the same tired cliches and platitudes

although true, these comments are relly surprising, particularly as it looks as though benni may have turned a corner. But if this is what it takes to keep him consistant, than BFS, well done mate

hes been told now, so i hope Benni does go back to his best, as when hes is, theres no stopping him. Remember that goal against Arsenal?

That simply beautiful.... he put in a really good shift yesterday, more of that and we cannot sell him.
