The East Lancashire derby, 2 football clubs, seperated by a few miles. Blackburn Rovers FC and Burnely FC. Lets just put it in perspective....
I asked a group of mates who play in my football team here in sunny Sydney to name me a few derbies around the globe...
AC Milan V Inter Milan
Man City V Man United
Everton V Liverpool
Arsenal V Tottenham
Celtic V Rangers
Sheffield Wed V Sheffield United
Fernebache V Galatasaray
Boca Juniors V River Plate
Real Madrid V Barcelona
The list went on and on....The East Lancashire derby meant nothing....and thats how it has been since 1888, the first official East Lancashire Derby....Blackburn 7 Burnley 1.
As the years went on, the results went back on forth. Played 95, Rovers 39, Burnley 38, 18 Draws. The last derby went to Rovers, with Tugay and Gamst scoring in a 2-1 victory in the FA Cup...
The history is there, the passion is there, but what makes the derby what it is.
Several clubs are in the vicinity, including Bolton, Preston and even Wigan. Yet, the East Lancashire Derby has always been Blackburn V Burnley. 2 towns, who's occupants are simply born to hate each other. Football fans or not, you dont get along. Their will be fights at pubs, brawls on the streets as passions ignite...
Who will take the crown in the 96th edition of the East Lancashire Cup???
We can only hope its David Dunn and our men having the last laugh come Sunday afternoon
