VB Weekend Winners and Losers

VB Weekend Winners and Losers

Well after finally gaining a bit of momentum the Rovers fell flat yesterday, the performance was in a word... sloppy.

A 3-0 loss at Everton is by no means catastrophic but the annoying thing was that Rovers were their own worst enemies.

After a poor first goal for Louis Saha the Rovers re-grouped in the second half and started strongly but then just as they were gaining a foothold in the match, they concede a second stupid goal. They then top that effort off by defending like a group of pigeons to let Yobo tap in a third.

A 3-0 defeat and Everton had barely left second gear.

Anyway lets see whos up for what this week in both categories.

WINNERS

PAUL ROBINSON - The best Rovers player by a mile and the only one who stopped the score being 5 or 6. Lets clear this up, Robinson was not at fault for any of the goals and was left exposed time and time again by careless work from the back four in front of him.

If anything Robbo was actually in top form between the posts. Last week I took a dig at Paul for poor cross work but he looked assured yesterday and pulled off, at my count, four top class saves.

One particular save, right at the end from the dangerous Stephen Pienaar, was unbelievable.

After watching the dreadful Ben Foster yesterday can anyone say that Paul Robinson doesnt deserve to be ahead of him in the England pecking order? Whats the betting that because one plays for Man United and one plays for Blackburn will stupidly count against Robbo?

Another cracking game either way for Englands number one.

JUNIOR HOLIETT - Did more in 25 minutes than Morten Gamst Pedersen did in 65. Came on, looked bright, got the ball down and played - why couldn't anyone else not called David Dunn do this?

Given the proper support Junior could be an excellent player, but he was left isolated by the rest of the side - particularly Vince Grella and Keith Andrews.

But the more you see of this youngster, the better he gets. A bright sprak on a dull afternoon.

DAVID DUNN - The main outlet of any (rare) mischief caused in the toffees defence and again took the game to them when he could but just like the West Ham game, he was often left to fight a lone battle with Roberts and often got crowded out.

However his skill was there for all to see and his strong runs are going to be key for Blackburn this term.

However he cant do it all by himself.

LOSERS

MICHEL SALGADO - Flipping heck. Yes he looks classy on the ball and yes you can tell he is good but putting him in against Stephen Pienaar was a baptism of fire to say the least.

Michel is not match fit and it showed. He got run ragged and often got caught out of position by the many Everton players pouring forward.

A swift end to a brief honeymoon period.

KEITH ANDREWS - You could never tell it was five vs five in the midfield yesterday as Cahill and Rodwell absolutely dominated Grella and Andrews and sadly the Irishman got shown up for his limited tackling ability and got butchered in the air for scrappy seconds.

His frustration bolied over as he was struggling to get on the ball much and was often caught shouting at the ref for little or no reason.

You get the feeling that if we go back to 4-4-2 it could well be Keith that makes way.

EL HADJI DIOUF - Not particularly for his play as he was a willing trier yesterday and played with passion but for his alleged racism.

Shouting at a kid in the crowd is not acceptable and if he has said the comment which I will not repeat on this good site he deserves a ban.

Shotuing at your team mates on the way down the tunnel is not on either - you're as much to blame Hadji as the rest for the defeat.

We saw the bad side of the man yesterday.

Robinson was world class yesterday, but as mentioned in the article, because he plays for 'little Blackburn' he won't get a look in for the England No.1 jersey...

When on form Robbo is the best English keeper IMO, but he had the shirt and made mistakes so *****e like Foster/Carson will get in ahead of him. Shame really as he's better than Green for me. Keith Andrews on the other hand is a truly terrible footballer, Rodwell at only 18 was bossing him all game

Yep Mike you're spot on with Andrews. A player with few redeeming features, having said that I thought Grella was even worse than Andrews yesterday. He did nothing and even his effort seemes lacking. Very disappointing to see.

it was difficult to watch on Sunday and I believe it one of those games where you struggle to find positives - and I agree with you too Durk - Grella was just as bad as Andrews.

Surely Steven N'zonzi has done enough to be picked ahead of Andrews in his few appearances this season? Not to mention Reid. Were they both not fit enough?

I think Steven was available but had just come back after injury - I suppose you have to be careful with players who are just fresh off of a recovery.

A fair and accurate account again Mr Mikey I'd say, couldn't really disagree with your winners and losers this week, I wish we'd be more hard pushed to find losers though and had to select more on flimsy evidence :)
