McCarthy Looking To Improve Fitness

Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy has said his priority during pre-season is to improve his weight and fitness.

The South African hitman has been criticised in recent seasons for his weight but has recognised the need to get in shape this season and has made it his number one aim.

McCarthy speaking to BBC Radio Lancashire said - 'For me, it's most important I work on my physical side,'

'Once I get back to being able to play 90 minutes and feeling 100% I know the goals will come because that comes naturally for me.'

This is great to hear from somewhat of a cult figure at Rovers. He needs to get in shape as a fit and focused Benni Mac is worth 15 goals a season in my eyes.

nice to see Benni put his hands up about this as it has been a problem for him.

If he wants to be involved with South Africa in the World Cup he needs to show them that he can score loads of goals - that should be good for Rovers.

Hmm.. Think everyone has overlooked the other side of this story. Why the hell didn't he decide this last season when we really needed him to bang a few more goals in?!

Can people also forget BFS penchant to drop Benni even if we didn't have any fit strikers. That would also curtail his ability to score lots of goals. I was just impressed that despite everything - weight n all - that he was still our top scorer. I fancy him to get a few more this season...given the chances.

well said roversman. Sam will not play a guy with a bad fitness streak and this will also inspire Benni to put in the yards.

Benni does like a burger, and a pie, and another and another but history shows that some players that are "larger" are still more than capable, so long as Benni scores (as he did!!) within reason I don't care about him being a bit of a chunk!!
