Big Sam Aiming For A Big Cup Run?

Rovers could next season be aiming for a run in one of the cups instead of a big push for Europe - thats according to Sam Allardyce.

The first priority this season will be, of course, to avoid last season struggles but if the opportunity to get a sneaky bonus in comes around - the limited resources of Rovers will be used to aim for one of the cups rather than a stab at the Europa League.

Big Sam speaking to Sky Sports said - "Personally having experienced Europe, which was a great experience, I`d much sooner get to a cup final than go through the season and finish playing in the Europa League.

"Because you speak to all managers with much bigger, greater squads than Blackburn have or Bolton had and listen to them moaning. Martin O`Neill, Harry Redknapp, Man City last year saying we`re being killed by the amount of games we have to play in the UEFA Cup.

"We did lots and lots of research many years ago on playing in Europe and realistically you have to increase your squad by 50 per cent minimum to compete at that level if you want to have a successful Premier League season and a successful Europa League campaign.

"You imagine going to your chairman or your financial director and saying well done Sam but now you`ve got to give 50 per cent more squad. It doesn`t happen.

"So you`ve got to be careful about your balancing act.

"Of course, we would take it with open arms because it`s a great achievement. But it`s not as good as getting into the FA Cup final or the Carling Cup final."

Personally I'd take tenth spot and a cup final right now!

...hang on a minute - if we do well in the cups and get to a final we'll probably qualify for the Euopa cup/league won't we? Then we'll have to play in it the season after and to be successful have to increase our squad by 50% (as BSA suggests) so I don't really understand what he's on about!?

we win money if we win cups? winning cups will make us more recogniseable across the world? bfs knows whats hes doing trust him

True yes we would qualify for Europe either way but I would like the cup more than the 7th spot in the league job! I would aim for the league cup as we have always been fairly strong in that!

Me thinks he's managing expectations - he said a lot without saying anything much - don't raise expectations of a top five place to qualify for Europa - fair enough. Not sure that he actually said anything about winning a cup though - just getting to the final? Let's face it - Rovers will aim to finish as high as possible in the Premiership (more money) and if there's a sniff of Europe they'll go for it. A good cup run is a great ambition but it's so unpredictable - too many banana skins - always just 90 minutes from possible elimination - an away tie with Chelsea or Man Utd (or Coventry) in the early rounds and it could all be over!
