JW : We Need To Keep An Eye On The Money

Blackburn Rovers chairman John Williams says the club will make significant cuts to the wage structure in time for the next season.

Rovers have always run on a tight budget but will be scrutinizing every penny that little bit more this summer with the global credit crunch slowly hitting football.

There was talf of mass change at Rovers but this seems to be a little wide of the mark. Whilst things won't stay as they are, expect a few alterations to the playing staff.

Williams speaking to Lancashire Radio said - 'A number of players are leaving and are not essential to replace, so that will go a long way to doing it.

'We've not got a bottomless pot of money and I think numbers will have to be reduced.

'We budgeted for a wage rise this year but that wasn't enough when you change manager and buy players in January.'

'The total extent of the wage bill was higher than we thought and coupled with the lower league position it was difficult for us financially'.

Rovers have never been flush with money but the squad will change in my opinion despite this statment from good old JW.

Especially if Croque goes as well.

This is why we needed a much better performance against West Brom could have been two places higher, sounds like a few will be gone and we will have a small squad next season.

No other cub gets this kind of honesty out of their Chairman. We know whats happening and why. Williams should be given full credit, but lets have faith he'll find enough funds to bring in some creative players

Do we need a big squad anyway? Last season saw a few fringe players that never really made an impact on the side. We have players like Zurab that are frustrated with not getting first team football. Rather than a large squad of utility players, is it not better a small squad of quality players who can command a regular place? We should also have the younger players coming through - Nick Blackman, Keith Treacy, Aaron Doran and Santa Cruz Jnr etc to provide cover in case of injury? Van Heerden looks intersting if he lives upto potential. I have faith in Big Sam to find effective players at a reasonable cost.

23 players is enough, it will give the younger players a chance to come through at times at well - buying players, backroom staff, new managers, wages etc in Jan wasnt in the plans for Rovers but at least Williams has come out and said all this - a lot of chairman just hide things under the carpet - ie: Ashley - at least WE know wot is happening in our club and the state of affairs, not for hock on e-bay!!! Once we get some club playing decent money for Santa Cruz and not miserable Spurs thinking they can get him for £10m ( only paper talk i know ) after all that is only £4m more than Frazier 'never played a game' Campbell lol JOKE!!! we can get rid of a couple more players - Zurab, Brown/Bunn, maybe both!! it should free up enough wages to bring in more quailty....

We can still work within this. It is just the chairmen being super honest and you have to respect that in my books.

A lot of respect for Williams but I wondered how much he is exaggerating so as to pull the wool over clubs eyes? There will be a lot of truth in this and it is great that he is honest with the fans.

I think he meant since that era Vinjay! Lets get realistic. For a successful small squad lets look at the names we need and that are essential - Robinson, Samba, Nelsen, Warnock, Givet, Grella, Emerton, Dunn, Van Heerden, Diouf, Roberts, McCarthy, Pedersen. Theres 13 players that are crucial. The rest that are on higher wages can be sold and lower cost replacements can be bought - Whos the master of that? Well looky here - its Sam Allardyce, manager of Blackburn Rovers.
