Williams: We Did Try For Villanueva

Williams: We Did Try For Villanueva

Blackburn Rovers chairman John Williams has confirmed that we did try to keep Carlos Villanueva at Ewood Park before his move to Al Shabab was confirmed.

The 23-year-old had spoken more than once about his desire to stay with Rovers, however, with good money offered to Audax Italiano from the Dubai based club (with good wages too) Rovers couldn't compete with this. Williams has confirmed that we did want to keep Villanueva on loan at Ewood again next season but this wasn't possible.

Williams told Setanta Sports: "Sam did not feel we could commit for a permanent transfer after the season Carlos has had. From getting chicken pox early on to the scrap we have had on our hands since.

"The general feeling is the type of football he played was not relevant to the position we have been in. We have been fighting for our lives.

"We did ask if we could extend the loan by another year but Audax wanted to sell him and so that was that.
"

It would've been good if we could've had the Chilean on loan again next season as I'm sure that Sam Allardyce would've used the midfielder much more next season but it wasn't meant to be.

I think on refelection this is best for everyone, whilst Carlos clearly liked it here he was going to be restricted with the dog fight we were in.

I think the right decision has been made here. A loan extension was the right avenue to pursue. Villanueva was overpriced and he has'nt impressed enough to warrant a permanent move.

Indeed overpriced, and in the premiership you cannot afford to carry a player through a game, maybe in the future he will become the business. Maybe not though going to play in the far east.

I thought he may benefit in the Spainish league... bit more cultured and technical over there.

I read an interview with modric the other day (I very similar sized player, probably smaller). When he was at Zagreb, they loaned him out to the Bosnian league which was famed for being very very rough as tensions from the Balkan Wars were still particularly strong there. The manager had basically had the idea that he needed toughening up and a baptism of fire seemed the preferred method. Modric claims it worked. I don't think Carlos has done the right thing in the long run, a spell in League 2 would have been the way to go ;)

He'll be an absolute star over here, what with his tricks and flicks, the crowds will love him in what is a pretty average league. But I can't see it's the best for his long term career. If we had signed him, it would have been a gamble on potential. BSA will better spend the cash elsewhere.

I think a loan deal for us and him would have been best - I'm not being funny but going from the Premiership to Dubai is hardly a step up!

i agree with the decision made not enough evidence for a permanent move so a loan would have been smart. As for carlos i think he will obviously do really well in the poor league and i think he has the quality to make in european in probably the spanish league latter on in his career

Maybe he thinks he needs to take a step down to come back stronger?

Championship Cost Per Goal So Far In 2016/17

The end of the Championship campaign of 2016/17 is only a month and a bit away from fans across the country but as we go in to the remaining weeks of the campaign...

Positive Signs For Bennett

Bennett was positive of Blackburn being able to see off Lancashire rivals Preston heading into this game at Ewood Park after the Norwich and Fulham results.

Minor Graham Setback

Blackburn had to do without Danny Graham against Preston following the groin problem that forced him off against Fulham last week. He could return against Brighton next week.

Hugely Frustrating

Mowbray admitted Blackburn didn't start the game well against Preston but had then been the dominant side so was 'majorly disappointed' not to record a victory.
