McCarthy Hails Rovers Display

Blackburn Rovers striker Benni McCarthy hailed the 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic as a "phenomenal" win.

McCarthy opened the scoring in the Ewood Park encounter on the stroke of half time and was delighted with the win that moved Rovers six points clear of the relegation zone. The South African International is now looking for us to secure our Premier League place and take the pressure of before the season ends.

McCarthy told Sky Sports: "It was phenomenal today. We came out from the start flying, we did what we were expected to do.

"It's just a shame we always leave it late and we're in the situation we are now.

"Hopefully this can motivate us for the next couple of games so we can get it off our minds and we won't have to rely on everyone else.
"

Due to injuries to Roque Santa Cruz and Jason Roberts (who was a pundit for Sky Sports) defender Christopher Samba once again filled in as a make-shift striker to partner McCarthy and he gained praise from Benni for the problems he caused.

He added: "It's weird but very nice because with his height he does distract a lot of the defenders and he takes all the attention and make you play with a bit of ease.

"He's been fantastic and the boys have been calling him Drogba, Kanu and Adebayor.

"He plays striker in training and he does all these fancy things and he seems to pull it off.
"

Using Samba as a striker is certainly unorthodox but the Wall is certainly effective, however, I'll personally be glad when Sam Allardyce either has the genuine strikers back or brings in the players that he wants in the summer.

that said, I was hearing the other day that Samba was initially a striker before he moved back to defence. Maybe, he's the next Drogba in disguise ;)

lol money... he is a good option up there but he is there for presence and nuisance more than anything else. good work all around yesterday. 4 more points and we are good I reckon.

I say we can win all the remaining games - Chelsea game NOT included - Samba has done well up there and if he helps Benni then why not!?!?! We def need to look at the whole team for next season, with the strikers and midfield being a real problem for us this season!!

I thought it was a solid performance on Sunday - so happy and relieved to get three points. What I can't understand is that with two injured strikers why doesn't Sam cancel Derbs loan contract and bring him back for cover?

I dont think he can just canx the loan, something to do with the red tape involved in the contract itself, the same way that even Gallagher cant play after his season long loan at Plymouth, even though their season IS over, for some reason UEFA in their blind wisdom have blocked him playing, saying the season of the parent club is not over, even though it makes sense for it to go the other way, but sure thats Platini - just shows u that good footballers DONT make good figure heads in the running of the game!!!!

I dont wanna tempt fate cos believe we'll get more but i honestly blieve that 38 points will do it this year.....Newcastle and Boro have got Liverpool and Man U respectively this weekend which means they should be at least six points behind us with three games to go!!!! They aint gona win all three n we aint gonna lose all four games in front of us!!! I think big Sam will overhaul the squad this summer.....Ooijer, Simpson, Khizanishvilli, Tugay, Dunn??, RSC, Gallagher, Derbyshire all gone....We need an injection of pace and ability across the midfield and forward line....I even thin Benni might go if Sam finds a replacement.....I say bring it on, the squad is agein and needs shakin up!!!

Totally agree with you on all your thoughts mani, we're SAFE and Big Sam will revitalise the squad with players that he wants and move on those he doesn't.
