Whelan: Hughes Should Succeed Fergie

It's unlike Wigan chairman Dave Whelan to have a view on footballing matters not to do with his club but he believes Manchester United should get Mark Hughes to takeover from Sir Alex Ferguson when he decides to retire.

Ferguson who is now on a one year rolling contract having gone back on his decision to retire in 2002. However when he does finally decide to leave Whelan, a former Rovers player, believes that there is no better man for the job than Hughes.

'Mark is my automatic choice to be Manchester United's next manager,' Whelan told the Manchester Evening News.

'No-one wants to see Sir Alex Ferguson calling time on a wonderful career but when he does stand down, I would have Hughes taking over. The lad wore the red shirt with pride and is still revered by United fans and is by far the finest British contender for what is one of the biggest jobs in world football.'

That Whelan has an opinion on everything he should shut his mouth once in a while.

I don't think Whelan knows when to be quiet. However, I am sure United fans would love to have one of their heroes at the helm when fergie retires, and lets face it, there is not one person who plays or watches or is involved in football that can doubt what a good job he has done at blackburn thi season. good luck to him, wotever he does

He is a good manager but I think that he needs to prove himself at a higher level before he can take such a job.
