Mathias' Backing For Rovers Midfield

Blackburn Rovers Assistant manager Ray Mathias has backed Vince Grella and Stephen Warnock to shine in the heart of the Rovers midfield.

One of sasman's favourites Grella signed for Rovers in the summer, and after injury returned to the side in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough where he played alongside converted left-back Stephen Warnock. Mathias thinks that they can be up their with the best in the Premier League.

Mathias told the Lancashire Telegraph: "If you look at Vince and Stevie Warnock in the first half, there is no one better in there in this division.

"They were absolutely outstanding. We knocked the ball about in there and that is what it is all about.

"I thought Vince did very, very well. He has overcome the injury that he had, which was a nasty one, and he lasted the 90 minutes and put in a good performance.

"Vince played a big part in there. He has a massive part to play in shielding the defenders and also making play
."

Warnock is a left-back by trade, and has previously played in left-midfield during his Liverpool days but a central role is something new to him, but he is doing this well. So well in fact that it's hard to move him back!!!

Mathias added: "I think Stevie Warnock is making it difficult for us to put him back in his usual position.

"We moved him back to left back late on but it was purely to fit people in.

"It was a shame bringing him out of midfield because he was doing ever so well in there.
"

They're both good, and looked good together (Stevie W in particular) but up with the best in the League? I think Ray's exaggerating slightly :)

I think it is very preamture to be calling them the best in the league. I am pleased Ray is enthusiastic about them and I hope they continue to be bold in their decisions. Warnocik has done very well in that central role.

since no one can really fills the left wing role at the moment, why not try him? although he doesn't have great speed, neither does gamst nor treacy. at least he may get some decent crosses.

Warnock I would say has a decent amount of pace. Certainly more than Gamst and Treacy I would say.

Woah!! Steady there Ray!

I wouldn't say the best midfield. It has the potential to be the best, when Warnock (and it looks like he'll be there all season!) becomes more accustom to the role. He has the potential to be a good box to box midfielder. And with Dunny, Reid (both when/if fit!?!) Emerton, and Carlos fitting in the attacking role, can only be good for us. The future is bright!

When dunny is back i would like to see Warnock back in defence and add a bit of experience and composure to the back line. Dunny and Grella was probably the pairing Ince had in mind when he bought Grella. Although adding a bit of versatility to the team cant be a bad thing

Can't wait to have DD back! I agree with Durks de rover completely. Versatility is a good thing

Grella first touch needs a bit of practice, but with the adjustment to the English game he should be able to fix that. Also his passing wasn't that great on the weekend was good at covering though think he still just needs time to adjust. Also hopefully not going to be injury prone has he is a doubt for tonight.

I think we can all agree that Warnock was very good on Wednesday. As long as he plays like that you wont here a peep out of me (well not much anyway!)
