Former Rover Henchoz Retires

Former Blackburn Rovers defender Stephen Henchoz has announced his retirement from the professional game.

Henchoz (who was plagued by injuries last season) didn't even make an appearance (I don't think?) and has been without a club since leaving Ewood Park for a second time, so the 34-year-old has decided to call it a day. However, the former Swiss International intends to remain in the game and is working on his coaching badges.

Hedgehog's career spanned 17-years as a professional, with his best years coming at Anfield with Liverpool where he won the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup all in one season (2001.)

Meanwhile the national media is linking Rovers with a move for two promising youngsters.

England Youth International Jason Banton is understood to be leaving Arsenal and Paul Ince is interested in recruiting the 16-year-old along with Liverpool's striker Nathan Eccleston, who is also an England Youth International.

Hedgehog has been a VERY good professional over the years. The way he left Ewood the first time round wasn't so pretty, but when asked to do a job when he returned (even though he was as slow as a hedgehog!) he didn't let us down when he returned. Good luck to him. Banton isn't a player I know anything about, but I have heard good things about Eccleston. If we could get one or both (two English talents as well!) then I'd not be disappointed.

I read somewhere (sky sports, I think) that Henchoz was going to pursue his coaching badges. Maybe a future defensive coach at Ewood!?!? I would prefer if Ince brought in established names in the January window, as well as future prospects.

Henchoz, at the end of the 90's was probably one of the best defenders in England: Smart, fast, great tackles...No wonder he chose Liverpool rather than staying with us. From what I've seen most of the supporters remember the "Old Henchoz" who was extremely slow and injury prone. Thank Roy Hodgson for at least having him here for 2 seasons (97-99).

A great pro and will make an excellent coach. Thanks for all the effort big man.

Isreali - Even though he was slow, in the games I saw him, his positional sense was still tip-top. And always good to have an experienced head in the camp. Had a formidable partnership with Hyypia at Liverpool

He certainly did Decimus... one of the best in the business at one point.
