Derbs Ready For The Call

Blackburn Rovers striker Matt Derbyshire has said that he is ready for the call should it come from Paul Ince, and if/when it does he will take it!

Derbyshire came off the bench to score the winning goal against Fulham on Saturday, but has been limited to substitute appearance this season with his only start coming against Grimsby in the Second Round of the Carling Cup (and he scored two goals that evening!!!) However, the England Under-21 International is determined to take his chance when they come as he knows he can score goals, but doesn't know how many he will score unless he knows he will have chances.

Derbyshire told the Daily Star: "Every player has targets at the start of the season, but you can't reach those targets if you're not playing every week.

"If I was playing every week, I'd be aiming at double figures as far as goals are concerned.

"But I'm not, so I have to grab whatever opportunity I can.

"It's down to me to perform and down to the manager to pick me to play. If he does, then I know I will perform.
"

Roque Santa Cruz is our number one striker now and with the form Jason Roberts has been in it is hard for him to be left out! All Derbs can keep doing is taking his chances when they come, if he does then a decision will need to be made by Ince. Derbs is a local boy and a Rovers fan so he is happy, but he won't always be happy and a time will come when a decision MUST be made, I just hope that this decision isn't made rashly.

Personally I think that Derbs will start against Everton in the Carling Cup, if he does the business then Incey has a decision to make, does he stick with Derbs or does he overlook him for a starting role again?!?! Derbs IS a Full England International in the making, we've got to keep him happy, but Incey also has to do what is right! Derbs won't be happy with a "super sub" role forever will he, but as long as he is given a fair chance I don't think he will be looking to leave anytime soon will he?

A great player but indeed does seem to be much more of an "impact player" rather than on a regular basis.

Great attitude as I have said before. His time WILL come and I think he is gonna take his chance. will start v Everton.

I agree that he has become an "impact player" but that is only because he has never been used consistently before now.....i think with the demise of Benni, who is surely on his way out and the drop in form of Roberts that this is the perfect opportunity to give him a good 10 game run. I really think he has the potential to be a 20 a season man with his eye for goal and Roque seems happier on the pitch with him........give him a go, we'll never know if we dont!!!

I know he will get goals if played from the start or bought on. He runs his nads off and knows where the goal is. What more do we want??? play him!!!!
MikeyGamst
Good call Mani, they look to have a better understanding than JR and RSC.
Desert Kiwi
the Everton game may tell us better him or ROBBIE FOWLER ..LOL LOL
oztheman
Well you say that Oz but if we want to rest Roque and Roberts Fowler would be a good choice against Everton... it would be a team that he'd love to score against

I can see Fowler & Derbyshire starting against Everton, along with Carlos, just behind them, and Emerton in a holding role. Gamst and Treacy on the flanks. The usual back line...
Decimus Poole
I think he'll play Carlos and Matty up front. As he did against Grimsby, then bring Fowler on from the bench.
