Derbyshire: I Could Learn From A Legend

Blackburn Rovers striker Mat Derbyshire believes that Robbie Fowler could act as a mentor for him at Ewood Park.

The 33-year-old is still trying to convince his friend, and Rovers manager Paul Ince that he is worth a contract with Rovers and should this happen Derbyshire feels that he can still learn plenty from the Liverpool legend on the training ground.

Derbyshire told the Evening Telegraph: "Robbie's a legend as we all know.

"He's someone I always looked at when I was younger.

"When the Premiership Wonder Years were on television, Robbie Fowler would always be on there with Alan Shearer and Andy Cole.

"They've been the main three in the Premiership, Robbie's been part of that. He's a great finisher with a great footballing mind and I'll learn a lot from him.

"He's got great awareness in and around the box and if I can pick something like that up from him, that would be fantastic. It would help improve my game
."

Fowler's arrival was met with plenty of moans and groans at the time, but whatever is decided will hopefully be the right thing. Fowler has lost a lot of things about his game that made him such a great striker but not all of this can have been lost as the quality that a player that is the fourth highest goalscorer in Premier League history isn't lost overnight. He could teach the 22-year-old (and others) a thing or two, but we also have other quality and experienced strikers to also do this, although some of them at Ewood might not have the right attitude that the former England International has???

If we keep Fowler he could be a surprise package (probably not but you never know!) so as long as his wages aren't going to be extortionate (for a player that might not play much) then he is probably worth a risk, maybe on a short-term contract until Christmas at first? Derbs could add to his game further by learning from Fowler, as he has Hughes, Benni, Santa etc. before this.

Matt Derbyshire is one of the most promising english striking talents i've seen in the last few years. I'd love it from an england fans perspective if he developed further with guidance from Fowler. Will he be getting much of a game this year?

Derbyshire is speaking like a future England striker...darn it there goes his career!!!! All jokes aside, derbs is a class act, showing the respect fowler deserves, whilst he might not be our best striker, fowler can show these young lads plenty of things

whats this Rigters like then? Big? Quick? Strong? Will he do good for Barnsley?
mattyg
Rigters has not really had a chance at Rovers wot with the strikers ahead of him but he was the top goal scorer with the Dutch U21's, ahead of Babel who cost Liverpool £10m or that. He has everything u need to succeed in the English game but just needs the confidence of a run of competitive games, reserve games are no good for that! As for Derbyshire and Fowler, there are no better player to learn from, one of the best of his generation!!
Clint
Matty, Robbie WAS the best of his generation but you need to learn from him now because surely to god we wont give him a contract!!!

Fowler is way past his best....Let's spend some money!!!!

although i don't think fowler will do gd for us he could help derby wiv his game to make him a beta overall striker
Lets Do The Samba
Fowler the best since Ian Rush, so no better teacher, as he was taught by the master.

Derbyshire has said all the right things here. He is right that even if Fowler is not as good as he was he still has the knowledge that made him great. Derbyshire can only benefit from spending time with Robbie.

i think people are taking the wrong signals out of the fact that Fowler is there, Robbie must know that if he's offered a contract it will be pay-as-you-play at the very most! This i think would mean he would be more in coaching role, albiet unoffically. He may be handy to have about as well, if Benni has another shocker and Roberts is as fit as he was last yr, it would leave us with only Santa and Matty, so anybody is better than no-one for back in that case
