Zurab To Fight For Place

Zurab Khizanishvili has spoken out that he is ready to battle with Ryan Nelsen and Chris Samba for a regular spot next season.

The 26-year-old Georgian international captain has struggled for a extended run in the Rovers first-team in the 2007/08 season as he was mainly used to fill in at centre-back when Ryan Nelsen or Chris Samba were ruled out or suspended and occasionally at the problem right back spot.

However, while fellow Rovers defender Andre Ooijer has recently stated his discomfort at not playing regularly in the season just finished, The Monk says he is aiming to step up to the plate and prove to Hughes he is worthy of a place in the starting XI.

With Nelsen set to miss the start of next season due to his expected involvement at the 2008 summer Olympics, Zurab's opportunity could come more or less straight away.

Zurab told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph: 'We've got some good quality defenders, our captain Ryan Nelsen, Samba and Ooijer. And I also play centre-half.

'I'm looking forward to going back fresh after the summer and fighting for a place.

'I can also play in different positions, which can make things a little easier for the manager.'

This IS the kind of talk we want to here isn't it guys? Especially coming from Blackburn Rovers' most underrated player.

good man Zura, its guys like this you need in the dressing room!! if he plays as he did when he was filling in (bar the citeh match) then ill be happy IMO he deserves to be playing and the team was picked on form he should be in there!!
dunne deal
Deffo dunne deal. He is a very consistent performer. He's not really a right back at all but he is a very good CB. We want players like thisin our team. he can consider himself unlucky not to have played more last season.

Great to hear players come out and say stuff like this but i am still not sure of him. I think his decision making is not always the best and he can be a bit reckless in the box but playing and training with Nelsen can only make him a better player. How about getting a retired top class defender in as a coach like Adams at Pompey.

Great words from the Monk. I DO rate him as a player, professional and a genuinely decent bloke.

The Monk NEVER lets us down when called upon, and I think he can count himself very unfortunate that he only ever comes in when others are injured or suspended, then goes straight out again when they are back. I expect him to play a lot more in the years to come though.

He is still at a good age. He always plays well at CB so having him as another option will never be a bad thing.
