Hughes: Patience Is The Key Benni

Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes has pleaded with Benni McCarthy to show patience as he attempts to win his place back in the Rovers starting XI.

McCarthy has this season struggled to make the impact that he did in his first season at Ewood Park and as such has spent a bit of time on the substitutes bench, currently (although Benni is injured at the moment) having to wait behind Roque Santa Cruz and Jason Roberts. However, Hughes is hoping that Benni can draw on the example Roberts showed when he waited for his chance, so Sparky hopes the South African International will do likewise.

Hughes told the Lancashire Telegraph: "Players want to play week in, week out but he understands the impact Jason has made in recent weeks.

"Jason had to be very patient and wait for his chance and in fairness, he's got an opportunity and taken it.

"Benni understands that and that happens in football so he hasn't got a problem with that.

"Jason has been very patient so Benni will have to be, but we all know the quality he has on offer and can produce, so I have no issue there at all
."

Benni recently signed a new contract with Rovers so he isn't showing any signs of wanting to move on, but it will be interesting to see how he reacts if he has to spent a prolonged period on the bench?!?!

JR has been VERY patient (despite his earlier transfer request), he's come in and done very well so is rightly retaining his place in the starting XI. The more competition we have the better, and hopefully this (and his new deal) will see Benni step up to the plate again next season being back to his best, as he'll know he will HAVE to in order to play!

Of course competition is good. Sometimes great players are on the bench dispite of their quality just because they're not confident enough..but that can be re-gained and class will come up once again. Let's hope Benni Mac try his best to have a bigger impact next season

I hope your right diegoveron, but I dont see it happening myself. I think it was a mistake to hand him a new contract, he should have been sold in my opinion.

A strong squad makes for good competition for places.

I think we need a bigger squad with better depth of talent. Benni may well be used in, dare I say it, a rotation system Benitez style... we may never play the same starting 11 again!

I think that Benni WILL be back to his best again next season, he has committed for the long-term so now he has to earn his right to play, and hopefully he will.

Benni is class and they say that is permanent. I just hope he can finding his scoring touch in one of the last two games before the end of the season. I'm pleased he got a new contract but not sure about the length. Still with Roque netting 20+ a season and Benni capable of the same it can't be bad.

Yeah, the length or the new contract is quite a long time isn't it, but then again it at least means we will get a fee if he wants out. He'll be back to his best next season I'm sure.

He spent a period on the bench last year if you remember and was only released back into the fray in the last 10 mins of the Arsenal FA Cup game... and what an impact he had there. Same again Benni.
