Hughes: In The End We Really Deserved The Win

Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes was delighted with the 1-0 win over Portsmouth on Sunday afternoon, a win that keeps Rovers' season alive.

To have ANY chance of an Intertoto Cup spot Rovers had to win and thanks to Roque Santa Cruz's strike near the end Rovers came away from Fratton Park with all three points, and all three points that Hughes felt were deserved.

Hughes told Sky Sports: "It was an excellent performance by ourselves, especially in the second half when we went up 10 or 15 per cent from the first half.

"I think we were comfortable in the first half but that extra 10 or 15 per cent just took us over the line.

"It was a fantastic goal by Roque. It was good movement and interplay between the two forwards, who I thought were excellent all day and led from the front.

"In the end we really deserved the win
."

We got the job done didn't we. We kept plugging away and got our rewards in the end.

Every time I see Sant Cruz, I like him even more. Great goal. I think it's his 21st of the season. Amazing!

Actually have a good chance for Europe just keep changing every weekend, will all depend on the other teams but still possible.
roverjoy
sorry, doubt you will get europe, as aston villa are playing so well, and everton need just 2 points from 2 games to finish above you. on the subject of the win, i dont want to sound bitter, but i really didnt think you deserved to win it. we had the better chances, and played the better football. having said that, our game earlier in the season was pretty similer, with an opositte result, so on balance of things, everything probably worked out the way it should have.

i thought we put in a great away performance against a team who are very good at home.
durks de rover
with that win, we remain 4 points behind villa after they drew withe verton. Comon wigan, do us a favour and beat villa lol
sasman
Sasman - I am of a differing opinion. If Villa finish 5th, and Pompey win the cup, the only other 2 teams vying for Inter-toto places are us and City. We are above city at present. Arsenal to play Everton at the Emmirates on Sunday :-) Come on the GOONERS!!! (The one and only time I will be supporting Arsenal...

The most effective away performance we have put in all season. Stifled them in the first half and upped our game in the 2nd to make the difference. A fully deserved 3 points.

Sasman, I'm fairly sure Everton have applied for the Intertoto as well, so even if they miss out on 5th they have that as a back up. We have to finish above Villa to get into Europe.

Sorry that was meant for Decimus Poole

We need Pompey to win the cup or only get a maximum of 3 points from their last two games, villa to pick up a maximum of 1 point from their next two games, and we need to win both of our last two games to get into Europe!

Spinaker - You would be correct. My source was wrong...He calls himself an Everton Fan! Therefore, we have to finish 6th to be guaranteed a spot, of 7th, with as long as Portsmouth finish 6th. My optimism is slowly fading...
Decimus Poole
You and me both!

i think that hughes must have been watching a different game as i cannot see how he believes blackburn deserved to win tbh... difference was you took your chance, we didnt! good luck for the rest of the season - i think a place in europe will be almost impossible to attain tho tbh fellas, but you never know?
pompeyrug
We had more possession, we scored more than you, we should have had a penalty, Defoe missed a hatful of chances... if you don't score you don't deserve to win!

Goals win matches don't they, Santa scored, no one for Portsmouth did!
