Sparky Wants Once Last European Push

Sparky Wants Once Last European Push

Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes wants one last final push for a UEFA Cup place next season.

Hughes is looking for the form shown against Manchester United last Saturday evening to act as an inspiration for the remainder of the season, and believes that IF that standard can be met against Portsmouth, Derby County and Birmingham City then an Intertoto Cup spot is still within Rovers' grasp

Hughes said: "After the draw with United, we have set the standard again,' Hughes said.

"We were disappointed with our performance at Liverpool, we did not really lay a glove on them and the display was very flat.

"I knew I would get a response against Manchester United, and that is certainly what I had.

"Now we have set the standard again. We know exactly how hard we have to run and how hard we have to play to be able to get results at this level.

"And that will he help us in the games we have left
."

Rovers would expect to beat Derby and Birmingham, so if Portsmouth can be safely navigated on Sunday afternoon then there is a VERY good chance that we could still sneak in the back door to the Intertoto Cup route?!?!

We have three matches left, three wins and there is a chance of that Intertoto Cup spot, anything less and the chance has gone. If we perform like we did against Manure we CAN do it, if we perform like we did against Liverpool then we'll probably lose ALL three matches!!!

hdm this means if villa wins 1 game, or if we fail to win a game, there is no chance lol. Heaven and Earth has to turn over for us to make it

Dont think we will make it this year. I think the early start in the summer hurt us after Christmas. We seem to run out of steam. Hopefully next season with a bigger squad we can qualify through fifth place. By the way what happens if an english team wins the champions league. Is there not an extra spot in europe the next season due to the automatic qualification of the winners. What was all that fuss about with Liverpool a few seasons ago

There is no extra place del if an English team wins the European Champions League. The only difference is if say for eg. Liverpool won the Champions League and finished 5th, the team that finished 4th would not qualify for it... tricky stuff. We've still got a shot at that Intertoto spot. Lets go for it and keep the faith guys.

guys there is an extreme option, the team that finishes below the intertoto spot can apply to start from the start of the intertoto campaign, thats an extra 2 wks early, dont think we are interested, but its an option

not a theory mate, read it up randomly on some official site. The team that finishes below the intertoto cup spot can applyto enter the intetoto from the very beginning. This means that we play an extra 2 or 3 rounds, meaning we start 2 weeks even earlier. No english team has taken this up in a while though so doubt we will lol
