Wiley Performance Frustrated Hughes

Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes has spoken about his frustration at the performance of Alan Wiley during Rovers' 3-1 defeat at Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Hughes believes that Wiley should've sent off Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel for a foul on Jason Roberts when the score was 1-0 to the Reds, as he feels that Roberts was clean through. Instead he only branded a yellow card, which visibly frustrated JR and other Rovers players (Stephen Warnock went as far as saying Wiley bottled it!!!)

Hughes is quoted as saying: "I've seen Jason Roberts get the ball out of his feet and go away from centre- halves and have shots on goal so it`s a clear goal- scoring opportunity from our point of view.

"If you're impeded when it's a clear goal-scoring opportunity, my understanding is that the guy gets sent off. Mr Wiley felt it merited a yellow card but that wasn't my interpretation of it.

"I think it's fair to say there was a bit of frustration from both camps about Mr Wiley's performance. I didn't think he had a particularly good game
."

Although Sparky was clearly frustrated at the decisions made (or not) by Wiley, these were decisions that he says would've frustrated both sides, however, he also went on to again conceded that it wasn't down to Wiley that Rovers did lose, which is true.

He added: "That wasn't the reason we were beaten but there were key moments in the game that could have had a bearing on the outcome.

"In the end, we created our own problems by conceding goals that could have been avoided, overplaying in the wrong areas, losing possession when we could have cleared our lines, missing tackles and getting done on one-twos.
"

I'm not sure if it was a red card to tell the truth, but IT IS things like that which frustrate me more and more as Rovers players ARE getting sent off for things like this, so it would've been interesting to see what Wiley would've done had it been a Rovers player?!?! With this said though Liverpool probably SHOULD have had at least one penalty and Samba was probably lucky not to get sent off himself!!! These were the inconsistencies that Sparky speaks about.

Should Samba have not been sent off for a last man folu on Gerrard or are we forgetting that? Match of the day also said the samba fould on Gerrard was a stonewall penalty.....Amazing how people have selective memories of certain games

Sorry Hughes Da Man you do say that in fairness....I just read the article without reading your reply. Best of luck for the rest of the season as Blackburn have done brilliantly well with the low amount of money Hughes has spent

We cant blame the ref for that performance. Absolutely shocking as i think Liverpool did not play that well and were there for the taking. Thats the end of Europe i think. The last couple of performances shows just how much we need investment in the summer because there are going to be a lot more teams up around our level next year and they all have a lot money to spend than we have.

Should Skrtel have been sent off? Yes. Should Samba have been sent off and a penalty given? Yes. Should Jason Roberts' goal have stood? Yes. Way too many inconsistences for a premiership standard referee.

Great point BMUF and 5 times with the greatest of respect the pundit who said "Samba's challenge on Gerrard was a penalty" is an ex Liverpool player. With the greatest of respect Gerrard took a dive. And samba's was a foul and a sending off but so was Skrtel's. Good win for you guys but Gerrard aint no angel.

agreed mikey i dont think gerrards dive in the second half deserved anything their knees came together but sambas leg was moving away from gerrard at the time. but as Adrianbrfc pointed out in a different article skrtel got away completely from a horrid tackle on reid in the first half the type they have been clamping down on lately so was lucky not to get a yellow. all that said our general discipline does need to be worked on and samba really needs to stop giving refs excuses to send him off.
durks de rover
I agree that Gerrard dived, twice, once in each half. Roberts dived as well, just before the yellow card incident with Skrtel when he throw himself in the penalty area and got upset that the ref didn't give him a penalty, even when he's the one who pushed Skrtel off.

Time to make the 4th offical earn some of his money give the lad a PC two second delay on playback (FACT) and help the guy in the middle make the right choice. By the time the players are finished hassling the ref he will know the correct choice. There is too much at stake at the top level your talking Millions of pounds with the new deal. Next niggle considering they are suppossed to be pro's now there not very fit @ 65,000 a year time to tie them to the tread mill.
Majiball
we need more referees in tha calibre as colina!!!!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/b/blackburn_rovers/7329350.stm Seems like this story has slipped through the VF net. He has a good point. Most referees have an opinion of certain players and/or teams which clearly cloud there judgement. How many freekicks have been awarded against us, and in the same game the same offence goes unnoticed when it was commited by the opposition. Having a fresh, unclouded, eyes to overlook games, may be the way to go...?
