Derbs: I'm More Than Just A Supersub

Blackburn Rovers striker Matt Derbyshire insists that he is more than just a supersub, and doesn't want to be labelled with this tag, and does eventually want something more.

Derbyshire has come off the substitutes bench to score the winning goal four times this season, and Mark Hughes appears to think this is the best way to use the 21-year-old, but Derbs is convinced that he can prove Hughes wrong, but knows he will have to be patient with the likes of Roque Santa Cruz and Benni McCarthy around, however, he is not looking to complain about this for a while yet should the situation not change.

Derbyshire is quoted on Setanta Sports as saying: "I don't want to be branded a supersub because I think I'm a bit more than that.

"I think it's just a case of being in the right place at the right time, coming off the bench.

"The gaffer knows when to put me on, and when he thinks I'm ready to start a game.

"I never bother him like that, unless it's a case of not playing at all, then I might go in and see him.

"It can be a bit frustrating but what can you say when you've got strikers like we have at the club playing ahead of you, particularly when they are doing well and scoring goals?

"At the moment, I can't really complain
."

The England Under-21 International is still learning all the time, should he still be being used in this way in a year or two's time that is when I think the local boy will start wanting something more.

Derbs is still young, I do think he SHOULD be used (or at least should have been) more than he has this season, but his time as a regular starter will come, if not then he might look at things, but NOT for a while yet.

He does need a bit more coaching and maybe some more time in the gym on the weights to gain some strength, exciting to have a young english prospect like Matty on our books.
adrianbrfc
He is a supersub but most the time he is just super will be a great player when he is older, bit of a lucky charm really!!

Derbs is going to have to very patient if he intends to forge a career for himself at Blackburn. As you say HDM he is still young and he is learning all the time but he will not get a fair crack in the first team anytime soon and I think he knows that himself. I don't blame him for trying to distance himself from this supersub tag, no professional footballer likes to be thought of in that way... but that is in effect what he has been more often than not this season.

derbs needs to bide his time, when he has started, he has really been ineffective. He is a impact player and slowly needs to build a greater presecence

Am a fan of this guy and he turned down Man U to play for you... great future ahead of him!
Matt_Us
The main thing he needs to do before he can be considered a regular starter is strengthen up a little. Great impact player at the moment and a superb finisher but he hasn't got the strength and presence of say Benni or Roque!

I think he is destined to be a Rovers great... some people may disagree but I think he has it all... bit of experience and he will go so far and I cant wait.

Derbs = the English Benzema ;) Give him a chance to start regularly and he WILL deliver
Bents4eng
MikeyGamst - Dude you'll not see me disagreeing with you, but I HONESTLY think he has the ability, not just because he is a "favourite" of mine.
Hughes Da Man
Very good player for his age and definetely a future England star, I think Derbs just needs to bide his time and wait, sooner or later Hughes will start to play him more regularly. Hopefully he can go on to be one Rovers greatest players It's always nice when it happens to a local lad
Big Man up Front
sorry folks but i can't help thinking he looks like a young Gareth Southgate - Nice goal at Newcaslte though - good finish!
merlin
If he goes on to have the career Southgate had, I'm sure he won't be disappointed (England regular, and captain...better penalty taker though...)! Derbs is one for the future. But wasn't that said about Paul Gallagher...? Have we sold him, or is he still on loan?
Decimus Poole
He is on loan at Stoke DP... Derbs has the patience to succeed. How mant times have we seen a "future star" blow his chances by moaning too quickly... you wont see Derbs doing that I can promise you.
MikeyGamst
You are right Mikey, the advantage is he IS a Rovers fan to isn't he, which helps.
